The Birth of the Modern Home | CE145-W-A 
The campaign for the modern home and the transformation from Victorian concepts of domestic culture into those adhering modern living were initiated by William Morris and the fathers of the Arts and Crafts Movement. In the wake of industrialization, they proposed alternative visions of production that integrated art and labor as well as manifesto that focused on furniture, furnishings, and the appearance of the modern home. Art Nouveau – The Art Home | CE145-W-B
The attempt to reform and renew the domestic sphere through a complete design program in fin-de-siècle Europe, had informed the European Art Nouveau home. Concepts such as an ‘artistic’ home, the Gesamtkunstwerk interior, nationalism, and a transformation from a historicist tradition into modernist ideals came to inform and define that unique home that tells the story of its time. The Art Deco Interior | CE145-W-C 
Two streams and concepts regarding the modern interior were developed in France between the two world wars, reflecting historical-traditional vocabulary on the one hand and an avant-garde approach on the other. Issues such as machine-age aesthetics, mass culture, antimodernism, and domesticity became apparent in the construction of the French Art Deco interior. Breakfast reception to immediately follow.

The Midcentury American Home | CE145-W-D 
The postwar suburban projects, the Case Study House Program, furniture production and promotions, are at the center of discussion of the American midcentury home. It is contextualized within postwar modern design and the work of such key figures as the Eameses, Eero Saarinen, Knoll, George Nelson, Robin and Lucienne Day, and Eva Zeisel.

Living with Postmodernism | CE145-W-E 
The departure from modernist ideals in home design toward the Postmodernist home reflect a critical shift in the practice of culture and consumption and in the understanding of concepts relating to the essence of interior design. Themes such as consumption of popular culture, kitsch, the transformation of the ‘good taste,’ and nostalgia, all came to play central role in the emergence of the postmodernist interior. For the first time, this year’s showhouse, chaired by Bunny Williams, will be in a luxury high-rise on the west side, the Aldyn on Riverside Boulevard between 62nd and 63rd Streets. The space measures 11,488 interior square feet and 7,480 exterior square feet and will present the work of thirty-two designers, including some of our favorites:

Arlene will highlight some of her favorite eco-chic projects, products, and resources, as well as share important knowledge to keep in mind when sourcing and designing for sustainable spaces. Arlene will also present the holistically sustainable philosophy and progressive approach of Creation Baumann, a leader in the world of socially and ecologically aware luxury design.

About Arlene Angard
Arlene Angard, a native of Venezuela, is one New York’s top Interior Designers. Her Latin roots influence her design concepts, and her vibrant personality and take-charge attitude are inspiring. She is motivated by travel and encouraged by beauty in design. She shows her creative thought process and sensibility to Mother Earth by the widest possible use of sustainable products in her design.

Participants will have exclusive opportunities to go behind the scenes to the two main trade buildings, including the DDB. The program will include face-time with interior designers, showroom personnel, magazine editors and members of the industry.

INTERIOR DESIGN CAMP is the brainchild of two New York-based interior designers, Evelyn Benatar and Susan Morrow. Benatar trained at The New York School of Interior Design and The Fashion Institute of Technology. Susan Morrow holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from Syracuse University, an M.A. in Education from New York University, and a New York City teaching license in High School Art.

The Teen Program is formatted as an open classroom with one-on-one instruction to encourage individual development of style and overall understanding of the basic elements that makes a room “work.”  Two 5-day camp sessions; Session 1, August 13 – August 17, 2012 and Session 2, August 20 – August 24, 2012.

The Adult Program offers a similar experience to the Teen Program, but will culminate with a “Design Run.” Participants in the adult program will walk through the trade buildings and be able to purchase items in the showrooms at net wholesale prices.

Wolfgang Puck’s Red 7 was the venue for the by-invitation-only dinner for seventy attendees, who enjoyed a three-course dinner of salad, chicken and mushroom risotto and a Meyer lemon tart. A private viewing of “The Total Look: The Creative Collaboration Between Rudi Gernreich, Peggy Moffitt and William Claxton” at the MOCA Pacific Design Center served as the icing on the cake.
