Hint: This showroom, renowned for extraordinary surfaces since 1969, is celebrating its 40th year with the unveiling of its much anticipated Anniversary Collection, a limited-edition folio of three tie-dye wallcoverings inspired by the company founder’s earliest textile works, now contemporized by New York designer Amy Lau.

At 2 p.m., Fortuny, Suite 1632, hosts Technology and the World of Interior Design. Mickey and Maury Riad, owners of the legendary Fortuny, are taking the interiors world by storm. Every Fortuny fabric is still produced in the same factory, on the same machines, using the same secret process and techniques handed down from generation to generation. Still, just as Mariano Fortuny used his love for the past and respect for tradition to create something completely new, Fortuny today continues to pioneer in the world of design and technology.

At 3:30 p.m., Editor at Large will present How to Succeed in the Design Business, featuring three top designers sharing their post-design school experiences: trials and tribulations of getting started, landing their first job, and recognizing their big break. Tips and advice will be offered on paving a path to success in a rapidly changing industry.

Other participating showrooms include Edward Ferrell, Gracie, Artistic Frame, Schumacher, Lutron, Romo, and Kravet.

Clark & Clark features a huge compendium of both classic and contemporary patterns, accompanied by thirty colors of Duralee’s popular Vision semi-plan texture. All designs are printed on non-woven, paste-to-the-wall quality and provide almost limitless design ideas for residential as well as commercial spaces.

Painting the walls was the first task on my to-do list once I had purchased everything on my list. The Benjamin Moore paints that I chose included a teal tone for the living room; a light, cold gray for the hallway; and for the bedroom, a neutral but sophisticated bold Trout Gray, making the bedroom cozy and inviting.

I knew that I had to come up with an idea for the entryway since there was no dedicated location for my keys, coat, or handbag. The solution to the problem became the fabulous wall-mounted shelf from CB2. I positioned a white ceramic stool underneath the shelf, et voilà: the bag goes on top, but the ceramic stool can also be used as extra seating.

I acquired the lithographs during one of my many expeditions to the Armory in Hudson, New York. I urge anyone with an interest in antiques to make a trip up there! You will find an abundance of interesting and inexpensive items, and I promise you will not leave without a phenomenal deal. Each lithograph cost me roughly $50, and I framed them with a simple gilded wood frame. I used Pierre Frey fabric for the pillows and made the art in the hallway, and I also found a few pieces at nearby flea markets that were inexpensive but great-looking items—not to mention easy to find!

All of the pre-drawn designs, laundry lists of products, and time and energy spent working on my “before” landed me with an “after” I’m truly happy with and comfortable living in. It’s only a matter of time before another itch comes and I’m back for another redesign!

The fabric was given to Lutron by the Création Baumann showroom on the DDB’s 15th floor, and this isn’t the only collaboration between the two showrooms—Création Baumann also makes several different roller shade fabrics in Lutron’s Gallery collection.

“We at Lutron are proud of our partnership with Création Baumann,” said showroom manager Katherine Rumbaugh. “We love the way our products have paired with Création Baumann’s and have gotten a great response from clients and designers.”

By allowing designers to work with their own materials, Lutron makes it easy to combine a designer’s aesthetic with a fully innovative and quality motorized shading product.

Revolutionizing the design of Roman shades by introducing the CERUS (Cord-Eliminating Roman Uptake System) safety technology, the innovation replaces the cords of traditional Roman shades with sheer uptake bands. This design creates a safer shade by eliminating exposed inner cords that may pose a strangulation hazard to young children. The uptake bands also improve reliability, by removing the possibility of cords tangling, and performance, by providing a quieter system with smoother, more even travel of the shade.

“Lutron is constantly evaluating current trends to provide customers with a well-rounded collection of fabrics for our shading systems,” Rumbaugh said. “Many of Lutron’s shading solutions are designed to accommodate customers’ own materials as well. We understand every designer and homeowner has their certain vision of how a shade should look, and we want to make that vision a reality through the use of their own materials on our motorized shading systems.”

The programs begin at 10 a.m., starting with the Agostino showroom, which hosts a Welcome Breakfast with art adviser Carole Pinto. The Art of Collecting: Building an Affordable Art Collection is the topic of Pinto’s talk, which is intended to introduce student designers to skills they should add to their design foundation.

At 11 a.m., Creation Baumann, Suite 1522, will host The Window with Erik Bruce. Window treatments are an all-too-often-overlooked opportunity for design in modern interiors. Noted window treatment designer Bruce presents a glimpse into his process: a fresh, new approach to treating windows and dividing spaces in harmony with the architecture. Having served as the principal designer at Mary Bright Inc. for the past eight years, Erik is now creative director of his own studio. He continues to develop inventive solutions for unique spaces, working closely with the architect and/or interior designer of every project.

At 11:30 at Pollack, Suite 1722, Textile 102: Inspiration, Imagination, Interpretation invites participants to start with the spark of inspiration and examine in detail how choices of material, construction, pattern, and color are resolved to create a physically functional and aesthetically pleasing fabric. Techniques for gathering and refining sources of inspiration will be shared, and we will look closely at the specific steps taken in developing a textile from start to finish.  In particular we will focus on the methods—some traditional, others cutting-edge—that designers use to create patterns and textures in fabric.

Lunch will run from noon to 1 p.m. Anichini, Suite 923, and Niedermaier, Suite 417, showrooms warmly welcome students for a special luncheon and tour.

Not that an apartment is really ever finished, because progress is timeless! A few weeks ago I spent the better part of my week, amid work and play, working on an apartment design project. My restrictions were only to keep the project on a budget—and a tight one, may I add!

First things first: imagine or draw out a final concept to keep in mind before you start. It doesn’t have to be definite or concrete, and it doesn’t have to be perfect or finished; it just has to be the foundation of something you know you want and that will help you mush on through the process until you’re finished. Think of it as a tiny light at the end of your tunnel.

In looking over my space, I knew that before I was to add anything, I would first need to purge a few things. So, the first thing I had to consider was which items in the apartment I wanted to keep and which items were ready to be tossed. Certain pieces in your living space can be an obvious “keep” or “toss” decision, but if you’re like me, many fall into the “know you gotta go but hate to see you leave” category.

The black leather ultra-modern sofa I’ve had for years as well as the IKEA kitchen table used as desk had to go. The deciding factor on this was simple: they did not complement the final concept I had in mind.

Once this was accomplished, I gathered a list of items I wanted to purchase. These included a sofa from Crate & Barrel, a bookshelf from Target, paint from Benjamin Moore, a wall-mounted shelf, and a ceramic stool from CB2. Also on the list, because it’s better to go bigger than smaller, were framed lithographs for the wall that I found at an antique sale in Hudson, a rug from Anthropology, pillows, and other ancillary items.

Once I got all these items, the fun part could start!

In the design challenge competition, students will design a window space that in his/her unique perspective will represent the best of what the DDB has to offer. The challenge is to see which team can come up with the most functional and visually appealing space, pulling from a pool of pre-existing furnishings. ASID will create five groups of the first 25 students to register online in advance. These contestants, as a team, must design and stage a space using proposed materials donated by a participating showroom.

The group will be given a 45-minute time frame to conceptualize, source, design, and stage their space. At the end of the day, the judges will tour each space and select the winning design. The winning team will have their space photographed and featured (accompanied by a short story including a brief description and name mention) by Editor at Large.

The second day of Market, February 2, will feature the editor in chief of Florida Design Magazine, who will lead a panel accompanied by Fernanda Chandoha, national manager of lighting and A&D at Baccarat, and Joyce Romanoff from Maya Romanoff in a discussion about their passion and enthusiasm for beautiful products and what it takes for these companies to consistently provide the world with glitz, glamour, and all things luxurious. A reception will follow at Baker Knapp & Tubbs.
