January has flown by in a wink and we’re hoping that Punxsutawney Phil predicts good news this Friday, inching us a few weeks closer to spring. Back in December, Pantone forecasted that 2018 would look mighty purpley – Ultra Violet, to be exact.
The Color of the Year often infiltrates all modes of life, from fashion to food to interiors, but GDG wanted to see if this trend is being adopted as much as expected. (Teaser: It kind of is!)
While Whole Foods anticipates purple edibles such as corn chips and even purple asparagus being a food trend, Houzz produced mixed reviews regarding the color prediction in interiors, seeing it easily on the catwalks, but less effortlessly on walls.
Better yet, maybe purple veggies and interiors will collide, since blue hues are thought to suppress the appetite, and red to stimulate conversation. Perhaps their purple offspring in a dining space is a great choice for a lively and healthy New Year?
Whether it is due to our obsession with the cosmos and geology, or a response to politically divisive times, purple is here and it’s time we all embrace it — and learn how to live with it. Interior Designers across the nation have taken on the challenge of incorporating this powerful hue.
“Interior designers are excited about Ultra-Violet! We love incorporating vibrant color into our designs and especially a color that is rich in depth and has a regal connotation,” Interior Designer, Katharine Posillico McGowan of Katharine Jessica Interiors said. Katharine often uses purple to brighten projects.
Katharine gives tips on incorporating purple tints, used in a recent Master Bedroom and throughout her projects:
- Purple is a wonderful accent color in a room. Ultra-Violet can complement many color schemes. Pair it with greys, white and blues.
- Purple Pops. For purple in a master bedroom, add pops in Euro Shams and throw pillows, or make a big impact with window treatments or a big ottoman.
- Make a Statement. In living rooms, Ultra-Violet pillows on a grey sofa, or an UV rug, make for spectacular statement pieces
- Purple can be easily added to bookcases or an étagère through purple accessories.
- Layer it Up. Purple works beautifully with almost every neutral, so it’s all about the incorporation of purple design layers.
This master bedroom’s ottoman was furnished with Kravet Venetian Violet fabric, Euro Shams are also Kravet and the trim is Kravet Custom Couture. The bed’s comforter Kravet, reversed side is Duralee.
