Winter getaways may not always include hitting the slopes, but one thing we can all agree on is nothing says “winter” quite like the cozy, rustic, and often fur-clad interiors of mountainside lodges and ski chalets. Can’t make it to Aspen or Switzerland? GDG has a curated collection of wonderfully wintery products to get the Lodge Look with an urban twist. We talked to interior designer and expert colorist, Alan Tanksley about his chic and cool lodge inspired project in New York’s legendary Woolworth Tower.

“While my emphasis was on maximizing the bright, open spirit of the apartment, I knew it was just as important to create an intimate and warm retreat for those harsh New York winter nights,” Tanksley said.

Tanksley, who has designed cabin homes in areas such as Snowmass and Vail, Colorado, knows how to incorporate refined rustic with contemporary style. He now had the challenge of converting a bustling cityscape to a faux mountain view.

“I was able to create a warm and welcoming Media Room with rich textured walls, deep comfortable seating and a more intimate, ‘feet on the coffee table’ kind of feeling, begging for warm blankets,” Tanksley said.

Aside from the bitter NYC winters, Tanksley was also inspired by the world-renowned Woolworth building itself, which features classic architecture unlike many of the new all-glass residential buildings popping up across the skyline.

“My approach to the design of this apartment was driven by the classic elegance of the Woolworth Building itself,” Tanksley said.
